Open Meeting - Laser 2000, Buzz and Iso classes Race Report

Buzz / ISO / Laser 2000 Open meeting at Herne Bay Sailing Club.

On the weekend of April 25th and 26th we hosted an Open Meeting for the Buzz, ISO and Laser 2000 classes.

There was an epic start to the first race on Saturday in a force 5 wind with one of the our ISO sailors causing havoc on the start line when he thought he was sailing an Ice-breaker and allegedly tried to sail through too small a gap, causing another ISO to crash into the committee boat.

There was such a bang, that the Officers on the committee boat thought Somali pirates were attacking them.

After the race an old wag in the bar said he was pleased to see the home clubs ISO sailor who had caused all the mayhem, glide between two competitors in the changing room, without actually making contact.

By the end of the first day's races the results were as follows for the Herne Bayers:

Dai and Tom:

Laser 2000:

  • Dai Griffiths / Tom Daniels - 2 firsts and a third.
  • Duncan Oliver / Carolyn Howson - 1 first, 1 second and a third.
  • Steve / Jane Lee - 2 seconds and a DNC (Did not compete).

ISO:

  • Ceildih Higgs / Alex Benfield - second, fifth and DNC.
  • Chris Brealy / Karl Royer - 2 thirds and a DNF (Did not Finish)
  • Jack Kilburn / Paul Smith - fourth, fifth and DNC.

Ceildh and Alex:

The social in the evening was excellent with some delicious dishes of Curry being served by our fanatastic social committee and a Picture Quiz being won by Dai and Kay Griffiths, which was the last thing that Dai won with Brian and Maria joining the racing on the Sunday morning.

On Sunday the wind conditions were extremely difficult with boats capsizing and the wind changing direction by 180 degrees at times. Brian and Maria Golton showed the laser 2000 fleet how to sail, by winning all three races. and showing that they are still the Kiddies to beat.

Brian and Maria:

Chris Brealy showed his generosity by lending his ISO to Paul Smith with a new set of sails whilst he sailed a Karl's boat. Might he have won this event using his new sails?

  • Brian / Maria Golton - 3 firsts.
  • Dai Griffiths / Tom Daniels - 2 seconds DNF (Did not finish)
  • Duncan / Carolyn Howson - fourth, DSQ, DNF.
  • Steve / Jane Lee - 2 thirds and DNF.

Comments

Duncan Oliver 2000 sailor

If Duncan had actually sailed through the gate on the weekend he could have pushed Dai Griffiths into 3rd place.  He is obviously a Laser 2000 sailor who just happens to own a Hornet.  Will Jim and Kate ever get their boat back??????

ICE Breaker

You wouldn't believe how surprised we were when we saw the ice........ could have been nasty.....
