Herne Bay Sailing Club Race Reports
Cadets ‘R’ Us
Sun 3rd May saw the first Cadet Day of the season at Herne Bay Sailing Club.  Fifteen Cadets took to the water in a Force 4 (22mph) wind, in a sea with large choppy waves.  This was the first weekend of the Volvo Championship Club Award training, which these youngsters will be partaking in.  This VCC scheme was awarded to the club to promote the Olympic Sailors of the future.  So if you wish to see some dedicated youngsters from all sorts of backgrounds be instructed how to sail to a high standard, or wish to join the Cadets, Herne Bay S.C. is the place to come.  We hear so much in the news about bored teenagers and disinterested parents these days that it is quite a treat to see these gutty youngsters braving the elements and being supported by a great bunch of volunteers (Their mums and dads).
The afternoon was a chance for the older generation to take to the water in a freshening breeze which saw some death defying sailing by Mark and Liz Sanders in their 18 foot Catamaran who won the first race of the afternoon; Liz spending a good deal of time 10 foot in the air, whilst they sailed on one hull in some big gusts.  She told me that she has every confidence in her Dad’s ability.
Mark has obviously been stung by some of the comments directed at ‘Cat sailors’ in the comments section of these reports recently and certainly arrived at the party today. In the second race they were disqualified for missing a mark of the course, otherwise they might have gained another win.
So forget the old MIAWWWWWWW and get a load of GRRRRRRRRRR.  Steady Tiger!
With Brian and Maria away it was a chance for another duel of the Visions and Laser 2000’s which ended in a draw with a 1st and 3rd v 2 x 2nds.  Game on?
Chris Brealy sailed extremely well in his Hornet but disappointed his bank of supporters on the Sundeck who had given up their Sunday afternoons to come and see him BASH someone on the start line.  'Only Joking Chris!'
Everyone seemed impressed by the course set by the Race Officer who certainly made sure that plenty of good sailing went on in fresh conditions.  All-in-all another good day at the office.

Comments

Low water sailing

Even the cat sailors don't like sailing at low water, at speed you cannot see or hear the race tower when you are that far out, hitting a rock or lump at that speed will trash the rudders too.
Listening to all the negative comments from the "half boats" about centre boards being damaged, unfair windward legs because boards cant go down - come on, what about we tray racing when the tides in!! easier for getting boats off the slipway too,
With the energy that we would be saving we could be mowing the lawns in the afternoon too.
It would mean sunday morning racing on occasions - what about it?

Mark.

Unbaised Starts

Or we can get the Race officers into a boat and have water starts with unbaised start lines!
