Bennett Boys take Race Officials for a ride!
Sunday morning racing is still proving not to be to the liking of most at Herne Bay Sailing Club as the starters in the first race of the day only numbered 5 entrants. HBSC is pretty unique along the North Kent Coast as one can sail at almost every point of the tide without having to drag one’s launching trolley across a vast area of sand or mud to get to the sea, and therefore the members have been spoiled by this luxury, tending to prefer to sail in the afternoon.
The main course was served during the afternoon with Races 3 & 4 of the Late Summer Series. In the first race there was such a starboard bias that the Bennett boys decided to take matters into their own hands on finishing the race by accidentally sailing over the committee boat’s mooring line with their deep dagger board still down, towing the Race Officials up the start line whilst they were trying to finish other boats in the race. Becky McNeil capsized her Laser before crossing the finish line, but having already completed a triathlon in London earlier she can be forgiven. The other youthful Laser sailors could only watch in wonder as the club’s senior Laser Rooster sailor Roger Hodgkison took third and second respectively only to be beaten by The Bennett boys and Chris Brealy in the Hornet.
