Late Summer Series 7+8 23/08/2009

After a week of brilliant weather this weeks racing started once again with glorious sunshine but with a strong southwesterly wind gusting force 4 to 5.  The course set was to a mark just off the Ship Inn and then a storming reach downwind to the storm drain outlet out towards Beltinge.  The start saw Hannah Golton in her Topper scream toward the windward mark but being overtaken by her parents and the Bennett boys in their 59er.  The downwind leg saw many a capsize by the laser fleet but the two laser 2000’s and the 59er screamed into a lead that the others had difficulty making up.  Brian and Maria Golton in their Laser 2000 sailed to victory followed by the Bennett’s in their 59er.  In the second race the Golton’s retired and it was left to Dai Griffiths and Tom Daniels in their laser 2000 to fight out for the honours in the fast fleet with the Bennett’s and Tony Herlihy in his Laser.  Hannah Golton won both the slow handicap races by a country mile.

Coaching

 Hi guys

Once again, considering the fantastic weather and the number of members we have at the club there really weren't that many boats on the water.  Once again we saw some great sailing conditions and the same people winning these races, that is Brian & Maria Golton and John & James Bennett. I know for a fact that Brian and John would love some competition, so how many of you sailors would be up for some race coaching sessions that would improve everyone's chances.  Either we collectively pay for some outside coaching, or perhaps a group of the best sailors at the club run a course.  The only way to get amongst the prizes is to get BETTER.  We always propose to do this but YOU need to want to do it.

Any takers?

Jane & myself will

Jane & myself will definitely be up for some coaching, we most probably need it more than most.

coaching

Dai,
I would be interested in some coaching especially after yesterday. I knew it was a mistake taking my compass off my BA! Totally confused by the second half of the course for some reason.

Coaching

Dai,

At Broadstairs SC they run coaching one saturday each month. This allows a programme to be developed over a 6 days. Each day also has some one lap racing at the end of the day, normally 6-8 races to practise the new skills and have some fun.

The Broadstairs coaching scheme

 Hi Brian

Sounds great, but where do we go from here?  Do we ask the membership whether or not they wish to buy into this and try and get a coach in.  Nathan and Claire are already doing this sort of thing for the novice sailors, but we are talking here about those who sail every week and wish to become more competitive. Or is there someone in the club prepared to take on this role?

Coaching

What they do at Broadstairs sounds like a good idea to me. Could we implement anything for the rest of this season?
Bruce

Coaching is for all

I think the coaching is for all, I would certainly welcome some! I think a coaching sessions needs to be part of an overall programme not just one off days to get maximum benefit.

I think we need to promote this now with a view for starting next season. We should get people to sign up for a programme for next year and include the details in the membership renewals, with payments if possible.

The coach should be from outside the club and I am prepared to try to find an appropriate coach. I understand that typically costs are in the £150-£200 per day. For 6 sessions over the season we would need a minimum of say 10 boats, making a cost of £120 per boat for the year. I would be happy to pay this! If this is too much for some memebrs we could mix outside coaches with the skills in the club from John, Nathan and even Hannah who was giving me tips in the 2000 this week!!
