Cadets at Clubweek is my personal highlight of the HBSC calendar, and this year has been no exception. Yet again a brilliant three days, with 50ish cadets having a great time supported by a team of more than 50 relatives and members.
A huge thank you to all the volunteers on and off the water and a special thanks to Ben & Jo, for wonderful organisation and leadership over the last three years. The highlights for me were how well the cadets worked together, seeing members and relatives who don't normally go on the water having a taster in the powerboats and (I'm biased here) the fantastic sailing the Dolphins did back from the icecream cruise in slightly more wind than forecast. A fitting end to the last day of the cadet activities was to receive the news that cadets Michael and Sam Dyer won the National School Sailing Association's National Regatta Fast handicap fleet at Datchet Water. They got 6 firsts in 10 races and won the series by one point. A brilliant achievement and inspirational for our younger sailors. They have gone straight to Hayling Island to compete in the 29er Nationals. Good luck Michael and Sam! Herne Bay Sailing Club. Family sailing at its best. Clare

There were six double-handed boats on the water today with 16 members and their guests afloat for Saturday Sailing. Laurie decided the conditions were perfect for the Seamanship skill of rudderless sailing.
After a quick briefing, including some top tips (centreboard half up, crew and helm sit forward, only do one thing at a time), the boats were launched and one by one the rudders were hoisted out of use. There was a bit of going around in circles in some boats, but others surprisingly-quickly got the hang of steering using body weight and moving just one of the sails in or out at a time. Fantastic weather, wind and water temperature for sailing and perfect for those who took a refreshing dip in the sea afterwards. Herne Bay Sailing Club welcomed 500 runners and their supporters for the Les Golding 10K this morning organised by Invicta East Kent Athletic Club. Congratulations to the six HBSC members who took part and thank you to the galley team for the hospitality.
