The improvers gather again and rigged with a strong force 3/4 westerly promising some exciting sailing. Some reefed while others started to estimate how many capsizes they would be performing. However in the time it took to get changed and have our briefing the wind dropped to a sedate force 1/2. The plan was to sail a short triangle composed of a beat, broad reach and run. The challenge for us was to continue to sailing flat while being fast round the marks. However once we got out the wind shifted so we switched to a figure of eight course combining a beat and broad reach across the out going tide.

Are you interested in sailing out to see the Smack & Sailing Barge fleet go round the Herne Bay mark in this Saturday's race? If so please email hernebaysailing@btconnect.com with the word YES in the subject line so we can judge interest. If we get sufficient interest then we will endeavor to arrange safety boat cover which will allow us to offer boat hire and let the Imporvers to join in. A decision on this will be made Friday morning based on response received at that time. The course starts at the Sandy End Bouy out to a mark in the position of the old Spaniard, in towards Herne Bay and back into the Swale to finish near the entrance to Faversham and Oare Creek. The race starts at 8.45 and has traditional used the Pier as the Herne Bay mark. We don't have exact times for rounding the Pier but will be updating this post as we get more information. However with the race starting at 8.45 we assume it would be late morning when they get to Herne Bay.
