Cadets Newsletter May

18/4/2017

What a great session we had in April, that unseasonal weather was perfect shake out. We have three events planned next month, see below, and we look forward to seeing you on the water. Please remember we are aiming to be on the water for 2pm so come down early to rig boats and get your gear on.

During May we will have the following Cadets activities:

6th May - 1.30pm for 2pm on the water
Following the shake out session last week we will be starting to practice/learn about dinghy racing.

13th May - 1.30pm for 2pm on the water
This session is in support of the RYA Push the Boat Out event taking place at the club. This is a chance to invite your school friends down to try out sailing. We want to get as many people involved as we can so please print out this flyer and take it into your school/clubs and let people know about this event.

Bi-weekly Friday evening sailing will start this month watch out for an announcement

Finally we need parents/guardians help through out these session if we are going to make the most of the time available. The key one is getting boats rigged and de-rigged and we ask that you help/learn how to rig the boats your child will be using.

Thanks

Ben & Andy

PS All members - If you would like to get involved with the Cadets section please feel free to come down and join in. It is great fun and wonderfully rewarding.

Cadets cancelled 10th Sept but good sailing tomorrow

10/9/2016

As the forecast has not improved we are cancelling cadets today, 10th Sept . However this does not mean you have to miss sailing as tomorrow, 11th Sept., the weather looks good, particularly for cadets, with light winds. The club has racing on both in the morning and in the afternoon so there will be safety boat cover pretty much all day. If you fancy a sail and have your own boat or, if are an experienced sailor, you can hire a club boat. You don't have to race and there is plenty of room on nthe water for those who just want to sail. Alternatively just come down and watch some racing from the sundeck with a cup of tea/coffee and a slice of cake from the galley.

See you on the water tomorrow?

Club Week 2016

3/8/2016

Picture
I think it is safe to say this years club week was a success, sunshine and good wind ensure everyone got lots of sailing and lots of fun. We had 6o children on the water with the youngest 4 and the oldest just turning 17. Split between six groups we had the Sharks in Fava's, Barracuda's in Toppers, Dolphins in Quba's  & Pico's, Manta ray's in Quba's & Tera's, Sting ray's in Optimists & Wayfarer and Tadpoles in Wayfarer, Topaz and Kayaks.  All in all thiry plus boats were put to sea and what a sight it was.
Monday and Tuesday were spent sailing in groups. We decided to take advantage of the wind as Wednesday was forecast to be a bit strong for the less experienced and so it turned out. With the forecast correct we sent the Sharks and Barracudas off to sail and launched a couple of wayfarers to take those who still wanted to sail off for a blast. Everyone else gathered on the beach for Dragon boat racing in Optimist hulls and raft building using windsurf hulls and  kayaks, not sure who won the subsequent races but lots of fun was had. Finally we broke out the water pistols and had a mass water fight. With the wind remaining strong we moved the BBQ forward, cleaned up and packed away and had prize giving before finishing up mid afternoon.
This year also saw the inaugural club week match racing event held on Tuesday evening. The goal was to have some fun and enable members who had to work during the day to join in the fun of club week. This involved one on one Feva racing over a short coarse. Helm/crews were drawn at random from a hat and each raced twice taking turns to helm and crew. Laurie kindly acted as RO and set a coarse close to the shore so those waiting to race could cheer/barrack those racing. This resulted in some weird match ups and humorous incidents were aplenty, a great way to let off steam.
Finally a big thank you to everyone galley, shore, instructors, safety  boat crew, etc. Every joined in and contributed to making the week a success, it was hard work but it was fantastic to see see te children having fun and learning/improving their sailing skills. You might think me a fool but I'm already looking forward to next year and doing it again.

During five days of racing in variable weather conditions in Santander, HBSC cadets Michael and Sam Dyer qualified for the Gold Fleet of the RS Feva Worlds, finishing in the qualifying rounds with a 9th, 4th, 14th and 25th in a fleet of 163 boats.

They completed the  the 8-race final series of the international competition in 48th position overall with a 12th finish in one of the final races. A huge achievement. Very well done Michael and Sam!

This years RYA Push The Boat Out is planned for 21st May 2pm - 5pm. This is a fantastic chance for us to promote the club and give people an introduction to sailing. In order to promote the event we are asking the club members, especially Cadets, to design a flyer for this event that can be taken to schools in the area. The flyer will need to include the following information:

Date - 21st May
Time - 2pm-5pm
Address - Herne Bay Sailing Club, Beacon Hill, Herne Bay, Kent, CT6 6BA

As well as the HBSC logo, RYA Push The Boat Out logo and RYA Training Centre logo which can be down loaded from the links.

Submit your designs to hbsc.cadets@gmail.com by 7th May
