Welcome to Herne Bay Sailing Club's Memorial Weekend, held to commemorate the lives of three members who took an active part in club life. Jim Newbery, a former Commodore, and Colin Sproxton were stalwarts when it came to assisting on committees, repair work, making up slipway sections and taking cadets out sailing. Our third member was a young man called Paul Smith, who loved the Sailing Club and put in his first appearance in 1988 aged 3 days. Paul got a lot out of his time down at the club, but in return he also gave back helping with the younger Cadets. Sadly Paul's ambition to take his sailing further was curtailed in 2011, when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and his long courageous battle sadly was lost 16th December 2013. To this end, we run this event to raise money for the charity Bloodwise (formerly Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research). Please come and support our event held over the weekend of 16th and 17th July. It is always held on the weekend nearest to Paul's birthday - 17th July. The weekend comprises of two races back to back on the Saturday and three races on the Sunday. On Saturday after the racing, Rock Choir will be performing before the barbecue, followed by music from local musician Dave Shepherd. Throughout the two days the galley will be open, serving hot and cold food and drinks, and one of Paul's all time favourites: a cream tea. The bar will be open from noon. Race times: Saturday 12pm, Sunday 11am (first race start time) Race Entry fee £10. All entrance fees to be donated to Bloodwise.
